KICKSTART RETURN SPRING INSTALLATION TOOL VESPA AND PIAGGIO 50-150

Kick start spring tool patterned after the Vespa/Piaggio OEM 020432Y or 19.1.20432 factory tool that is no longer in production and was rather costly ($100+).  The kick-starter return spring is under heavy tension. This special tool is designed to safely rotate the kick-start shaft and pre-load the stiff return spring so it can be hooked onto the crankcase cover without causing damage to the belt case or spring.  Attempting to pry the spring into place with screwdrivers or pliers instead of using the specific tool is highly discouraged, as it can easily result in the spring slipping and causing injury or damaging the aluminum belt case.

Instructions for use:

• Initial Placement: Insert the kick-starter shaft (sector gear) along with its return spring into its housing in the transmission/crankcase cover. Make sure the inner end of the spring is correctly engaged with the shaft.
• Attach the Special Tool: Fit the special tool onto the splined outer end of the kick-starter shaft (the part that sticks out of the outside of the casing where the kick-start lever normally goes).
• Pre-Load the Spring: Using the leverage of the special tool, rotate the kick-start shaft. This action winds up and tensions the return spring.
• Anchor the Spring: While firmly holding the spring under tension with the tool, hook the free end of the return spring onto its locating peg/post on the inside of the crankcase cover.
• Release and Finish: Once the spring is safely anchored onto the peg, slowly release the tension on the special tool.  Install the shim washers, c-clip and kick starter lever.
