Vintage Vespa exhaust systems get hammered pretty bad. The older they are the more rusted the get and being 2-stroke they will get coked up with carbon on the inside causing them to lose power.
Also since they hang low under the scooter they tend to get dented, cracked, and scraped on curbs and other street obstacle.
For optimal performance and appearance your exhaust should be replaced every 5 to 10 years depending on use.
